Helping create safer, fairer and more trusted digital environments

Technology & Society

Helping create safer, fairer and more trusted digital environments

Digital technologies are reshaping how people access services, participate in society, consume information, shop, learn, work and interact with government. But technology policy is not just about systems or platforms — it is about people: how they behave online, who is protected, who is excluded, who is trusted, and how digital environments can be designed and regulated in the public interest.

Verian helps governments, regulators and public bodies understand how people experience, use and are affected by digital technologies. Our work spans online safety and regulation, attitudes to AI, digital public services, misinformation, disinformation and trust in online environments.

Our strongest expertise sits at the intersection of consumer-facing technology, public policy, behavioural science and digital regulation. We help clients understand what people do online, why they do it, what risks they face, and how policy, regulation, communications and platform design can create safer, fairer and more trusted digital spaces.

We worked with Ofcom to understand how digital platform design can better protect users from potentially harmful online video content. Using our Behaviour Change Lab, we built a realistic video-sharing platform that mirrored the experience of leading consumer platforms and tested how different interface features influenced user behaviour. By combining digital product design, behavioural science and experimental analytics, we identified interventions—such as alert messages, auto-skip functionality and enhanced reporting tools—that encouraged safer user actions and generated robust evidence to support future online safety regulation.

AUS_P_936987104_1920x1080v2We are leading the European Commission’s Digital Transformation Accelerator (DTA) Phase II, supporting the network of European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) to accelerate digital transformation and AI adoption across Europe. Working with partners including LOW Associates, ALLAI and the University of Bologna, we are helping SMEs and public sector organisations access advanced digital technologies, expertise and innovation services. Through platform development, ecosystem building, knowledge-sharing and AI-focused support, we are strengthening Europe’s digital innovation infrastructure and demonstrating our expertise in delivering large-scale digital transformation programmes.

EN-BE-web4hub-1920-1080We worked with the European Commission through the WEB4HUB project to explore how digital identity systems can evolve to protect consumers in Web 4.0 and virtual worlds. Our research examined how secure, interoperable digital identities can help people participate safely in increasingly complex digital environments shaped by AI, immersive technologies and connected devices.

Verian's latest research on Australians' reactions to artificial intelligence found that three in four Australians used an AI tool in the past year, with chatbots leading adoption for information, content creation, planning and fact-checking. While AI is delivering clear productivity benefits, the study highlights important risks, particularly for people with disability and users of companion apps, where experiences of emotional dependence and inappropriate content have been reported. The findings provide an evidence base to inform Australia's evolving AI policy agenda, helping policymakers, regulators and technology providers balance innovation with appropriate safeguards.

Our expertise

We combine behavioural science, policy expertise and innovative research methods to help clients address complex challenges in consumer-facing digital technology.

We have particularly strong experience in online safety, protection of children and vulnerable users, and understanding how people behave in digital environments.

Using approaches such as online experiments, simulated digital platforms, large-scale surveys, qualitative research and evaluation, we generate robust evidence on what people do—not just what they say.

Our teams across the UK, Europe and Australia support clients throughout the policy cycle, from strategy and design to implementation, monitoring and impact evaluation, helping create safer, more trusted and effective digital ecosystems.
