Education, skills & Employment
Helping governments and policymakers address these issues through research, evaluation and evidence-based insights, with specialist expertise in engaging children and young people.
Globally, education systems face complex challenges. Disparities in quality across all stages of the education system, shortages of trained educators (particularly in STEM fields) and socioeconomic inequalities can disadvantage many young people.
Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic worsened learning gaps and recovery has been unequal. Inadequate SEN support, pupil absence, and insufficient investment in education infrastructure are all top of many educational institutions’ to‑do lists.
The transition from education to work can be challenging, as formal education often does not fully align with labour market needs, leaving many young people underprepared for employment. At the same time, barriers to lifelong learning can limit adults' ability to adapt to changing work patterns and technological advances.
We bring specialist expertise in designing and delivering safe, accessible research with children and young people. Working with government departments, agencies and policymakers to provide access to international evidence, deliver robust and inclusive qualitative and quantitative research, and evaluate interventions to strengthen sector knowledge and outcomes.
Our work on employment and labour markets covers workforce trends, skills, job quality, inclusion and social protection. We assess skills needs, monitor labour-market change, evaluate policy and regulatory impacts such as EU Labor law, and help align education and training with employer demand to support lifelong learning and quality employment.
Our work in action
Since 2023, Verian has delivered the Department for Education’s Omnibus Surveys, providing rapid, evidence-based insights from teachers, school leaders, parents and pupils across England. The research helps shape education policy on issues such as attendance, behaviour, school resources, teacher recruitment and retention, and the use of AI in learning. By identifying challenges and emerging trends, the surveys support better educational outcomes and help prepare young people for future employment opportunities.
We worked with NFER to deliver England’s contribution to the OECD’s 2023 Survey of Adult Skills, assessing literacy, numeracy and problem-solving among nearly 5,000 adults. The study found that higher skill levels are strongly linked to educational attainment and employment outcomes, while also highlighting growing skills gaps. The findings provide evidence to inform policies that strengthen lifelong learning, workforce capability and economic productivity.
Since 2004, Verian has led the Longitudinal Survey of Young People in England (LSYPE), one of the UK’s most important studies of young people’s transitions from education into further study, training and employment. Tracking participants over many years, the research provides rich insight into how family background, education, wellbeing and wider life experiences shape future outcomes. The findings have informed government policy on issues including educational disadvantage, participation in learning and employment, helping decision-makers better understand the factors that influence young people’s life chances.

We delivered Germany’s Adult Education Survey (AES) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, providing one of the country’s most important measures of adult participation in lifelong learning.
Conducted to rigorous Eurostat standards, the survey tracks trends in training, skills development and digital learning, while exploring barriers to participation and emerging educational needs. The findings inform national education policy, support the National Continuing Education Strategy, and provide a vital evidence base for policymakers, researchers and workforce development initiatives.

We contributed to the COVID Social Mobility and Opportunities (COSMO) Study, one of the largest longitudinal studies of its kind examining how the pandemic has affected educational inequality and social mobility among young people in England. Following thousands of students over time, the research provides vital evidence on the long-term impacts of disruption to education, wellbeing and future opportunities, helping policymakers understand how to reduce inequalities and improve life chances for the next generation.
Europe’s higher education landscape is highly diverse, making it difficult to compare countries and universities and understand where progress is being made or challenges remain. Verian leads the development and delivery of the European Higher Education Sector Observatory (EHESO) for the European Commission, bringing together comparable higher education data and information from across Europe.
For universities, EHESO provides tools to benchmark their performance against around 3,500 institutions across Europe. For students, it offers a dedicated tool to explore and compare study opportunities. Policymakers can monitor national higher education systems through an interactive scoreboard covering 83 indicators, while researchers and academics can access detailed institutional-level microdata on higher education, student mobility, research and other activities. EHESO also produces its own analysis on issues such as international student mobility, universities’ role in innovation ecosystems and the development of STEM-oriented higher education. Together, these resources make European higher education more transparent and support better-informed decisions.
Verian provides analytical and facilitation support to the European Commission and Member States as they develop and implement initiatives under the European Education Area and related cooperation frameworks. This includes evaluations of key policies and programmes, comparative studies on topics such as learning mobility, micro‑credentials and learning outcomes approaches, and hands‑on support to EU working groups and expert networks. Our work helps align national reforms with shared European objectives and strengthens collaboration across education and training systems.
Verian supports the European Commission’s monitoring of the Employment and Social Innovation (EaSI) programme, assessing how funded projects improve labour market participation, social inclusion and working conditions. Through data analysis, case studies and stakeholder engagement, we identify effective interventions, emerging needs and lessons for policymakers, helping guide programme delivery and future EU employment and social policy to maximise impact for vulnerable groups and diverse forms of employment.
