Research on Public Perceptions of Working as a Magistrate

Verian has partnered with our client, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), to understand public perceptions of magistrates and who is eligible for the role. This research forms part of the Government's recruitment drive for more magistrates, led by the Ministry of Justice's 'You've got the makings of a magistrate' campaign.

Approach

Using an online methodology, a representative sample of adults 18-65 from England and Wales were surveyed using Kantar’s online omnibus. The research was conducted 3rd – 5th July 2026, with 961 interviews completed.

Quotas were set to ensure a representative sample in terms of age, gender, region, and socio-economic grade. Age and gender were interlocked (meaning quotas are set, for example, for females 16-24). We surveyed only respondents in England and Wales with the overall sample weighted to be nationally representative.
